Domestic cattle ovulate and conceive throughout the year, a fact that has perhaps contributed to the paucity of information concerning the effects of photoperiod on the physiology of this species. Nonetheless, duration of daily light affects many physiological functions in cattle, some of which may be importantly related to traits of economic significance. Light, by virtue of its daily and seasonal variations, is one of the primary cues whereby animals schedule reproductive functions, metabolic adjustments, moults and migrations (Ringer, 1980). The focus of this chapter will be to review research on the effects of lighting on some serum hormones which affect growth and lactation in cattle.
