The authors discuss the resurgence of malaria in India from 1965, when it was estimated there were only 100 000 active cases and no deaths, to 1976, when there were over 5 000 000 cases though only 19 deaths (there were also 10 000 000 cases in the first 9 months of 1977). Comparison with the principal vectors in the 1940's (before any major control programmes) showed that Anopheles culicifacies Giles was still the dominant vector but A. stephensi List. was increasing in importance as an urban vector.
