Discusses the utility of assessing event-related cortical potentials (ERPs) in infants at risk, especially premature and low-birth-weight neonates, in providing a direct source of data on the integrity of sensory pathways and brain structure during development. Various assessment procedures are described, including visual evoked potential to flash stimulation and pattern reversal, cortical potentials associated with visual scanning, brainstem auditory evoked potentials, and cortical evoked potentials to tones and speech sounds. The usefulness of 40-wk postconceptual age electrophysiologic testing of visual and auditory function and cerebral status lies in the possibility of detecting actual or potential neurological damage, while the ERP methods used in term evaluation yield information on cortical auditory processing centers.(20 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
