In most younger patients, it may represent a developmental malformation, while in cases of later onset, it may consist of reactive lesions after trauma or irritation. It is suggested that the descriptive term ‘cartilaginous tumour-like lesion of the tongue’ may be a more appropriate term than ‘chondroma’, which may mean a true neoplasm.
