Complete destruction of the pars intercerebralis [PI] very soon after emergence strongly reduced egg production, prevented egg deposition and inhibited sexual receptivity. Partial destruction did not prevent copulation and oviposition, but mating had no longer a stimulating effect on egg production nor on egg deposition. The brain seems to be the normal target for mating stimuli, and the PI the necessary relay for obtaining the stimulation which is mediated by neurosecretory material. An increase in ovarian production occurred in some partially parsectomized virgin females. An inhibitory center in the brain was probably suppressed.
