Powder x-ray diffraction patterns of pale yellow, yellow, orange, and red orange forms of mercuric oxide are recorded by an electronic counter. They reveal that the four forms have an orthorhombic structure. No indication of the presence of a brick red hexagonal form in the orthorhombic form is observed. The average micro-strains decrease progressively as the colour passes from pale yellow to red orange. A comparison between the observed and calculated structure factors indicates the presence of lattice imperfections. The relative variation of density and that of the unit cell dimensions shows that these imperfections are due to Schottky defects, which are prevailing and are greater in the pale yellow sample than in the other forms.
