The national and regional epidemiological patterns in Brazil, in 1998, were investigated using the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY), the health indicator of disease burden. The results showed that chronic and degenerative diseases accounted for 66.3% of the national burden of disease, followed by communicable diseases, perinatal and maternal conditions, and nutritional deficiencies (23.5%), and injuries (10.2%). It is suggested that the use of DALY permits the identification of health priorities based on the epidemiological profile, allowing easier decision making and use of resources by managers.
