10 22–55 yr old overweight females participated in a behavioral treatment program for 18 wks that consisted of 3 consecutive phases—baseline, diet only, and diet and exercise to investigate the effects of diet and exercise on Ss' resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR was monitored as Ss lost weight. Results indicate that dietary restriction lowered RMR by an amount nearly double that expected on the basis of resulting weight loss and suggest an explanation of why rate of weight loss typically declines or ceases entirely in the later stages of diet-only programs. It was also found, however, that exercise caused RMR to rise to a level appropriate to prevailing body weight, suggesting that the metabolic consequences of exercise can counter the energy-conserving metabolic adaptation to dieting. Findings provide a new justification for including exercise in weight-reduction programs.(29 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
