Blindness occurring in ischémie optic neu ropathy is well recognized, but there have been few histopathologic studies of the vi sual apparatus in this disorder. The condition generally results from either arteriosclerosis or giant-cell arteritis of the central retinal artery or the vessels nourishing the anterior portion of the optic nerve. In this paper we present a case of is chémie optic neuropathy with unilateral ocu lar involvment, in which both eyes, the optic nerves, and the chiasm were studied histologically. While the etiologic diagnosis is rendered difficult by atypical laboratory and histopathologic findings, the clinical history strongly implicates temporal or giant-cell ar teritis. The literature dealing with the histopathology of ocular temporal arteritis is re viewed.
