This study examines the development of verbs in the early periods of lexical and syntactic development (from 13 to 25 months) in children acquiring Korean as their first language. Specifically, it investigates three topics: the developmental pattern of verbs in the early lexicon, the morphological properties of early verbs, and the syntactic role of early word combinations. The data show that verbs constitute a significant proportion of the early lexicon in Korean and form a distinct morphological class. Verbs ave also productive in multiword combinations from the beginning and occupy a consistent position in utterances. Syntactic analyses show that transitive and intransitive verbs participate in distinct argument structures. Thus, contrary to claims that verbs are universally acquired later than nouns, children learning Korean acquire verbs from the earliest stages of language production and accord them consistent and systematic morphological and syntactic treatment. The paper explores several language-specific characteristics of the input that could explain the early acquisition of verbs in Korean.
