The interrelationship of motor, cognitive, and language domains in infants at high risk of motor disabilities is an understudied area. This retrospective analysis of cognitive and language abilities in infants who could sit and those who could not sit at 5.5 to 6.5 months of age highlights the importance of interdisciplinary or multidomain assessments and intervention. The authors suggest that a critical period to positively influence developmental outcomes in cognitive, social, and language domains may be missed without early intervention or regular assessments. Given the high rate of interrelated motor, cognitive, and language delays in infants born preterm, intervention to prevent or reduce the severity of these delays should be considered.
