~HIS is the fourth edition of the text by Gibbons II (1971), which was revised in 1985 and again in 1992 (adding the second author). It is an intermediate level textbook in nonparametric statistics that requires a standard one-year sequence in probability and mathematical statistics. It is a good mix of nonparametric theory and methodology focused on traditional rank-based methods. The level of the text is more mathematical than the mostly methodological books like Conover (1999) or Higgins (2004), but less theoretical than Randles and Wolfe (1979) or Hettmansperger and McKean (1998). Its focus on rank-based methods also distinguishes it from Higgins (2004), which takes a more general rank/permutation/bootstrap approach to nonparametrics.
