Strains of P. falciparum with 8 to 15 times the resistance to pyrimethamine of normal strains appeared within 5 months after the instituting of weekly prophylactic treatments among the population of limited areas of Tanganyika. Within a period of 10 months to a year, such immune or resistant strains became established at an infective rate of about 80% of the earlier condition. This new strain is not morphologically distinct from normal P. falciparum. The resistant strain seems to be slowly spreading to untreated individuals in the immediate area (up to a 5-mile radius). Fortunately the new strain has not as yet shown resistance to proguanil therapy. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: A. C. Walton
