Abstract The article highlights the impact of missions in the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century : Missionary reports contributed to the development of colonial knowledge in general and to the formation of religious studies in particular. Furthermore these missionary reports, which were also shaped by theoretical assumptions and analytical techniques of contemporary philological disciplines, had direct political effects. The representations of Islamic practices in the 1880s, for instance, helped to show the need for German interventions in colonies which were supposed to be threatened by Muslims. Reports by missionaries also had another influence: Through thousands of articles about non-European religious practices, including Buddhism and Islam, Christian societies first got to know about previously unknown religions. This proliferation of new religious possibilities enabled the German society to move towards religious and cultural pluralism.
