This investigation is directed toward uncovering the primary factors responsible for modification of the mammalian slrull. The majority of such studies have been confined mainly to the Primates where both drastic changes in posture and locomotion, as well as progressive elaboration of the brain have greatly confounded the picture. The result has been an inflated literature of conflicting opinion involving every detail of local remodeling.“But even in such cases where an understanding of the form can be obtained only by revealing the direct cause of its shaping, the studies usually are restricted to the closest local relations without any special consideration of further connections”(Weidenreich,’41). In order to ap-praise observations in terms of the whole animal economy, the factor, or closely correlated group of factors of primary survival value in the ecologic history of the groups studied, was considered. It appears that all else in the animal economy will be in some way subservient to the major element upon which survival depends.
