Several studies in the United States and Britain have shown linkages between socioeconomic status and health. 1 The mechanisms through which these linkages occur, however, remain unclear. Our primary analyses explore such potential mechanisms by examining the independent and interactive effects on health outcomes, after 20 years, of three different sets of variables linked to social status: job conditions and psychological and sociodemographic characteristics.
