Observations in vivo on the cheek pouches of hamsters infected with T. spiralis showed sticky leukocytes and leukocytic pavements in the venules and veins during the first few weeks after infection. By the 5th week the formed elements began to regain their normal flow. This evidence of an inflammatory reaction coincided rather closely with the time when larvae were presumably being produced by the adult worms in the intestine. Blood flow remained unobstructed in the arterioles. The larvae in the striated muscle fibers became surrounded as early as the 19th day after infection by a conspicuous vascular network of venous vessels, easily observed in vitro or by the intravascular precipitation of lead chromate. These vessels appeared to be sinusoid, with larger lumina in early stages than at later times, and arose from one or more arterioles. The intricate branches, loops, and anastomoses did not have a fixed pattern although frequently there were conspicuous vessels running transversely across the axis of the cyst. The network vessels drained away from the vicinity of the larva into one or more venules. Nearly one yr. after infec-tion the vessels of the network were smaller in diam. and apparently fewer in number, with the whole network relatively inconspicuous.
