A central 1[degree] bipartite field was surrounded by 37[degree] adaptive field, all being controlled by monochromators and neutral wedges. Right half test field was 550 m[mu], at 10 mL, 20 mL and 40 mL; left half at 50 m[mu] intervals 450-650. Matches were made to equal brightness. The adapting and surround luminances were hues perceptually unique to the observer, white, blue, green, yellow, and red, at 10 mL, 20 mL and 40 mL. Test exposures were 1.3 seconds, in large brightness steps ascending and descending. Data are presented as relative luminosity curves, paired color adaptation against white adaptation, for each of 2 observers, for each combination of test field luminance and adaptive luminance, and color. Relative luminosity is then plotted for yellow versus blue adaptation and for red versus green adaptation and compared with results obtained previously (Jameson and Hurvich, J. Opt. Soc. Am. 43:552, 1953) for threshold. For a single level of neutral bright adaptation, no systematic differences occur among equal-brightness functions at different luminances. Finally the differences observed are applied to the CIE luminosity function for standard observer to show what the functions presumably resemble for blue, yellow and red adaptation. At some wavelengths there are 2- to 3-fold differences between the different states.
