MethodsThe study population includes participants in COPDGene (the Genetic Epidemiology of COPD Study) who completed comprehensive clinical history, quality of life questionnaires including St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), pre-and post-bronchodilator spirometry, and chest CT scans (7). Exacerbation frequency and death data were collected at 6-month intervals as part of a longitudinal follow-up program (8). Participants were recorded as having a respiratory exacerbation if they had increased dyspnea, cough, or sputum production requiring treatment. Severe exacerbations required admission to the hospital or emergency room for treatment. Vital status was obtained through the follow-up program and from the Social Security Death Index.
