This study was conducted using 400 unsexed 1-day-old Japanese quail chicks, which were equally divided into 4 groups of 4 replicates each. The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of dietary humic substances (HS) on growing and laying performance of Japanese quail. An experimental starter-grower basal diet (24% CP and 2900 kcal ME/kg diet) and a layer basal diet (20% CP and 2900 kcal/kg diet) were formulated. The 1 st group of chicks was fed the basal diet without any supplementation of HS as a control group. The 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 10, 20 and 30 ml HS/kg diet; respectively. Therefore, 4 experimental dietary treatments were studied during starter-grower and layer periods. During growing period, growing performance, carcass traits, tibia bone traits, villus height, intestinal microbial count and pH and some serum biochemical indexes were determined. During laying period, egg production traits, egg quality and hatching parameters were determined. The main results during growing period showed that supplementing Japanese quail diets with HS at a level of 10 or 20 ml/kg diet gave the highest body weight gain; percentages of dressing, breast, thighs and liver; tibia density and strength; percentages of tibia ash, Ca and P as well as serum Ca and P %. The main results during laying period showed that supplementing Japanese quail diets with HS at a level of 10 or 20 ml/kg diet gave the best improvement in egg weight and mass, egg specific gravity, egg shell thickness, egg shell %, hatchability %, hatch chick weight value and rickets %. From the nutritional point of view, under conditions of current experiment, it could be concluded that Japanese quail fed diets supplemented with humic substances at a level of 10 or 20 ml per kg diet showed the similar improvement in growth performance, carcass and tibia traits, serum biochemical indexes, egg production traits, egg quality and hatching parameters.
