Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) homologs from non‐bioluminescent species of class Anthozoa determine a vivid coloration of coral polyps. Discovery of these proteins significantly expands the color pallet of available fluorescent probes towards the red region. Extensive mutagenesis of the wild type proteins resulted in variants with improved brightness and protein maturation speed as well as outstanding mutants such as fluorescent timer and kindling fluorescent proteins. Spectral characteristics for the main color groups ‐ green, yellow, red fluorescent proteins and non‐fluorescent chromoproteins, and their putative sequence determinants are discussed.
