An effective new method for the placement of an anti-adhesion barrier film using an introducer in laparoscopic surgery

Materials and methodsHandling Seprafilm with laparoscopic forceps is difficult, but surgeons can apply it to the target field easily by using an introducer (Reduction Sleeve™; KARL STORZ GmbH & Co. KG, Tuttlingen, Germany). One-quarter of a sheet of Seprafilm is rolled up and inserted in the introducer, which is a cylinder with a diameter of 12 mm (Figs. 1, 2). The introducer is inserted into the abdominal cavity through the laparoscopic trocar (size 12 mm) on the assistant’s side of the operative field. The assistant guides the tip of the introducer to the target area and pushes the Seprafilm from the rear using a cotton swab with a diameter of 12 mm (Fig. 3). The surgeon can then handle and spread the Seprafilm using grasping forceps with both hands and a gentle touch (Fig. 4). By this method, the surgeon can apply the Seprafilm precisely and easily.
