Continued growth in hydrocarbon demand is driving the oil and gas industry to explore new or under-explored areas with problematic or extreme geological formations, which often impose great challenges to drilling engineers. Lost circulation, equipment failure, pipe sticking, and wellbore instability are major problems that can arise during the drilling of these problematic formations. Lost circulation is still a serious problem to which a complete solution remains to be found. Published survey data for Gulf of Mexico (GOM) wells show that the lost circulation downtime of wells with a water depth of less than 182 m account for over 12% of non-production time (Dodson et al. 2004).It is common to classify lost circulation into three main categories according to the characteristics of thief zones: permeable loss, fractural loss, and vug-fractural loss. Research on lost circulation control follows two directions: mechanical and chemical approaches. Mechanical approaches involve analyzing the reopening and sealing mechanisms of fractures based on rock mechanical mechanisms (Westergaard 1939; Barenblatt et al. 1962; Barenblatt 1963; Papanastasiou and Thiercelin 1993; Lenoach 1995; Jin et al. 2008; Zheng et al. 2010; Wang et al. 2011), whereas chemical approaches investigate and evaluate new materials or formulas that can be used to plug the leak-off
