From 1969 to 1980 a total of 99 cases of human Babesia microti infection were recognized in the USA (55 in Massachusetts, 43 in New York and one in Rhode Island). The incidence rose rapidly from 1975 and in 1980 there were 17 cases, 15 of them clinical. The 57 clinical infections included 3 induced by blood transfusion (in 2 cases in splenectomized patients). There was only one fatality. The parasite originates from white-footed mice and is tramsitted by Ixodes dammini. Differential diagnosis (from malaria), treatment and prevention are described briefly. Human infections by other Babesia spp. are tabulated by year and country.
