METHODSXne members of the Swiss and Yugoslavian ski-jumping teams, attending an international training camp in-St, WIoritz, Switzerland, volunteered to take part in these experiments. During the first 4-5 days, when the athletes were familiarizing themselves with the jump (critical point: 77 m) and becoming adapted to the altitude of 1,800 m above sea level, preliminary control experiments were carried out.The athletes made the ascent to the starting platform on foot; on reaching the top of the ramp, they rested for several minutes before putting on their skis. After a countdown of 2 min, the starting signal was given. The run down the ramp lasted 6.5-7.5 set and the jump itself 2842.88 sec. The performance of each athlete was judged by the trainer. Heart rate was measured electrocardiographically by radiotelemetry with a transmitting and recording system developed by F. Hellige 8r. Co. GmbH., Freiburg i. Br., West Germany. During the ascent from the judges’ tower to the platform, which took 5-6 min, heart rate was checked for 15 set once every minute. Continuous measurement of heart rate was begun 2 min before the starting signal and c ended 1 min after landing.
