Christopher Read, a senior lecturer in twentieth-century European history at the University of Warwick and author of Religion, Revolution and the Russian Intelligentsia and Culture and Power in Revolutionary Russia, has produced an excellent account of the expectations of the ordinary population from 1917 to 1921. In an attempt to provide a balance to previous histories that examined events in Petrograd and then argued that trends spread from the capital throughout Russia, Read has synthesized the works of other specialists to illuminate the goals and activities of workers, soldiers, and peasants. Read’s work investigates the various local factors that motivated the popular movements and then examines the dynamic interaction between the people and the center. Designed for the general reader but extremely valuable for college-level history classes, the book provides a framework for understanding the shift in popular support from the Provisional Government to the Bolsheviks and then away from the Bolsheviks when the latter attempted to halt the democratic forces that they had ridden to power.
