MethodsHospitals were contacted initially to explore the possibility of their participating in a cooperative evaluation of surveillance methods. These contacts were made on the basis of requests for epidemio-logic assistance or investigation, through the American Hospital Association, or through personal acquaintance. Selection of hospitals for inclusion in the study was based on their lack of affiliation with a medical school, their provision of general medical and surgical care to a com-munity, and their voluntary agreement to partici-pate. The 6 hospitals included in the report all participated in the study throughout the 18-month period from July, 1965, through December, 1966.
