In heterozygous condition, the gene for oligosyndactylism ( Os ) in the mouse ( Mus musculus ) causes syndactylism on all four feet and sometimes suppression of digit 2. Os/Os homozygotes are inviable and die before the 12th day of gestation (Gruneberg, 1956, 1961). The present study was initiated to identify the Os/Os homozygote and to establish the circumstances of its death. The stock of Os mice studied was maintained in the Department of Animal Genetics, University College London. During the later part of the work, a colony was established at New York University Medical Center from mice kindly sent by Professor Gruneberg. Embryos from Os / + × Os / + and from Os / + × + / + matings were examined between the 3rd and 8th day of gestation. Age was determined by the standard vaginal plug method. The morning on which a vaginal plug was found was taken as day 0.
