Lakes, reservoirs and ponds exist in almost all parts of the drainage basin and preserve records over varying timescales of the movement of fine particulate material through the sediment cascade. Several developments have taken place over the past three decades that have produced improved methods for the collection, dating, analysis and interpretation of the records contained within these sedimentary basins. Coupled with other sources of geomorphological, archaeological and historical data the information provided by palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on lake and reservoir sediments provides important insights into the factors that accelerate or reduce erosion rates. The value of information derived from these sediment sinks increases as the analysis of lake sediments is incorporated into broader studies of erosion and sediment transport at the catchment scale as part of an overall strategy aimed at placing contemporary process studies in a historical context and in exploring controls on the sediment delivery process at different timescales.
