The more than 900 well defined and presumptive genes that have been assigned to specific human chromosomes or are recognized as part of a linkage group are arranged in alphabetical order by gene symbol in Table I and by marker name in Table II. Only loci for which mapping data have been approved at this and previous gene mapping workshops have been included: anonymous DNA segments which were listed in previous catalogs are now found in the report of the mapping by recombinant DNA technique committee. Symbols for the genetic markers follow the guidelines approved at the Edinburgh Workshop (HGM5)(Shows et al., 1979; Shows and McAlpine, 1979) and amended at the Oslo Workshop (HGM6) and the Los Angeles Workshop (HGM7)(Shows and McAlpine, 1982; Shows et al., 1984). It is urged that these guidelines be followed for an orderly and uniform system of naming and cataloging human genes. Guidelines have been presented for naming enzymes and other proteins, inherited disorders, cell surface markers, antigens detected by monoclonal antibodies, anonymous DNA segments, cell culture markers, proto-oncogenes, pseudogenes, chromosomal fragile sites, markers whose functions are not known and several other categories and subcategories of genes (see HGM5, HGM6 and HGM7). As a result of advances in genetic and molecular technologies minor amendments have been made to some symbols.
