Numerous species of animals live in the nests of ants. Among the most bizarre are those in the dipteran family Syrphidae, genus Microdon . Their flattened, disc shaped larvae, and the sluglike larval locomotion led to their misidentification in the past as molluscs and coccids. Hennig (1952) described the variety of morphological forms in the genus.
