If all the stylistic evidence appears to such students as Hosius and Muinscher himself to favor, or at least not to exclude, Senecan authorship, and if the historical allusions all admit of explanation on the theory that the play is a genuine one, doubtless posthumously published, then the defenders of its genuineness need feel no disquietude at the defection of Professor Miunscher. In fact, I look in vain in his second article for any essential argument not already common property even before the writing of his first study, and a careful reading of his palinode leaves the impression that his conversion was a bit sudden and not at all points complete, as though his own judgment had been constrained by the auctoritas of another.'
