The macrobenthic biomass was estimated in a restricted part of the North Sea. Muddy sediments prevailed in the northern part, sandy sediments in the southern part of the area. In the northern area macrobenthic (ADW) [Ash-free dry weight] biomass was 10.6 .+-. 5.6 g .cntdot. m-2, in the southern areas 5.7 .+-. 3.4 g .cntdot. m-2. The standard deviations were relatively large also within stations, which obscured seasonal trends in biomass. Most organic C in the sediment was dead organic C. Macrobenthos contributed .apprx. 10%, dead and living algae another .apprx. 10% of total organic matter. Some species were confined to the sandy area, more species were characteristic for the muddy area and very few were found all over the area. The species composition indicates a Venus gallina community in the southern part and an Amphiura filiformis community in the northern part. The quantitative composition of the dead molluckan assemblages was different from the living assemblages. The most important cause for this discrepancy was admixture of an old tidal flat fauna. Remains of this .apprx. 9000 yr old fauna are still present at or near the sediment surface. This suggests little sedimentation in the area studied. The dead assemblage therefore was a strongly condensed fauna. Condensed faunas with a mixture of remains of successive communities living under different environmental conditions may be more widespread in the geological record than earlier recognized.
