In the last 13 years, two excellent reviews in this journal have drawn attention to the importance of museums and similar institutions in the learning of science. In 1983, when Arthur Lucas focussed on scientific literacy and informal learning, museums and science centres formed just one of four sections in his review. More recently, Paulette McManus provided'an introduction to the field of education in science museums'(1992, p. 157). Her review provides a useful historical context to the science museum phenomenon and to the social context of people's behaviour and learning in them. McManus noted, in closing, that science museums' are still evolving as a communication form and much work needs to be done on the assessment and description of the nature of their communicative activities'(1992, p. 180).
