The metalation of ferrocene by means of re-butyllithium and mercuric acetate has been further investigated. The lithiation reaction has been extended for the preparation of trimethylsilylferrocene and 1, 1'-di (trimethvlsily 1) ferrocene. In the mercura-tion reaction, the ratio of starting materials has been varied in order to obtain optimum yields of either chloromercuriferro-cene or l, l'-dichloromercuriferrocene. Chloromercuriferrocene has been converted to diferrocenylmercury by means of dispersed sodium, sodium stannite, and sodium iodidein ethanol.Since the discovery of ferrocene1 2" 3 in 1951, over one hundred technical publications haveappeared in the literature concerning cyclopentadienylmetal compounds. 4 In this and subsequentpapers we wish to report some new derivatives of ferro-cene, as well as discuss the various synthetic methods by which substituted ferrocenes can be made.
