The effect of topical application of dexamethasone in the normal eye on intraocular pressure and fluid dynamics was reported in 2 age groups. Both groups demonstrated an increase in intraocular pressure and a reduction in outflow facility and rate of formation of aqueous after 4 weeks of drug application. The magnitude of the effect was significantly greater in the older age group. Complete recovery, in one to 2 weeks, followed cessation of drug application in all cases. Possible mechanisms of drug action on outflow facility and rate of formation of aqueous were discussed. The clinical significance of this effect was outlined. Two cases that developed ocular hypertension during the therapeutic clinical use of dexamethasone were reported.
