This final chapter is devoted to one of the most fascinating predictions of general relativity: black holes and black hole thermodynamics. Following Townsend (Black holes, arXiv:gr-qc/9707012, 1997) (see also Bardeen et al. (Commun Math Phys 31, 161–170, 1973), Poisson (A relativist’s toolkit: The mathematics of black hole mechanics, Cambridge University Press, 2007), we introduce the Kerr solution, whose importance is highlighted in the black hole uniqueness theorem. We then discuss abstract Killing horizons and prove the zeroth, first, and second laws of black hole thermodynamics. Finally, we briefly mention Hawking radiation and its role in fixing the black hole temperature and entropy.
