Cows and goats were injected with a primer dose followed by constant infusion of NaH14CO3for a period up to 7 h. A constant specific activity was reached in respired CO2after 1 h and in plasma glucose after 2.5 h. Injection of sodium propionate intravenously caused an increase in plasma glucose concentration and increased specific activity of glucose relative to CO2in both cows and goats. Increased transfer of14C from bicarbonate to glucose reflects increased gluconeogenesis after propionate injection. Injection of sodium butyrate caused different responses in the 2 species; there was a greater increase in plasma glucose concentration in goats than in cows, and in goats the specific activity of glucose decreased sharply while in cows it increased. Goats appear to respond to butyrate injection by increased glycogenolysis. Cows show increased gluconeogenesis after butyrate injection which is best explained as an effect causing greater conversion of pyruvate to oxaloacetate, presumably by enhancing pyruvate carboxylase through increase of acetyl coenzyme A.
