17 boys and 17 girls in each of 3 experimental groups were used in a study of the reinforcing effectiveness of approval. One response in a 2-response game was selected for reinforcement and the 3 experimental conditions were social deprivation, nondeprivation, and satiation for approval and social contact preceding the reinforced trials. It was found that the reinforcing effectiveness of approval was relatively greatest after social deprivation, intermediate after nondeprivation, and least after satiation. Approval was effective as a reinforcer after all conditions, and boys and girls responded similarly in this experiment. 16 references.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
