For bilateral LSCD, cultivated oral mucosal epithelial cells transplantation is one possible technique for corneal epithelial replacement. 2, 3 Recently, successful cultivated CjEC transplantation has been reported in animal models. 4, 5 Because conjunctival gene expression may be closer to that of the corneal epithelium than to that of the oral mucosal epithelium, this method may be a useful alternative treatment for bilateral LSCD. We also speculate that an amniotic membrane with epithelial cells may prevent fibroblast invasion and neovascularization. However, the indication of cultivated CjEC transplantation is limited to degenerative cases without severe ocular surface inflammation as in the present case, because bilateral LSCD such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid often involve the conjunctiva. Further investigation is needed to clarify these issues.
