Infralingual plicae are folds on the lower surface of the central shaft of the tongue, often modified into anteriorly-directed flaps. Among squamates, these structures have been found only in lizards of the family Teiidae (sensu Boulenger, 1885), and except for most Bachia species, they occur in all microteiids and macroteiids. This and detachment of an anterior segment of the lingual process of the hyoid are identified as synapomorphies of Boulenger's Teiidae. These findings contradict recent work in which Boulenger's Teiidae (including microteiids) was believed to be undiagnosable and polyphyletic. The hypothesis that microteiids are monophyletic is questioned and microteiids are again included in the family Teiidae.
