After the success of the Oxford Companion to Irish Literature, Oxford University Press produced a similar exercise for Irish history (1998). This second edition, now released as a paperback, brings current affairs up to the year 2001 and expands the scope of the original in the fields of pre‐history, the visual arts, and literary figures. As in the first edition the subject index consists of broad categories (74 here) with headwords listed under them, and the maps–modern, ecclesiastical divisions, political divisions in the ninth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and modern transport and communications (eccentrically combining airports with the 1914 railway layout)–are retained. The lack of a general index occasionally proves frustrating. Since there is no entry under “Silken Thomas”, the tenth Earl of Kildare, the reader has to hunt for a while to find him mentioned under “Kildare Rebellion”.
