The aim of this article is to focus on the figure of the journalist Mário Filho, whose contribution was very important to sports press. The journalist helped to recast the language used in the representation of sports events, especially soccer. His texts had a very particular style, originated from popular periodicals as Crítica and A Manhã, both owned by his father, Mário Rodrigues. In those papers, Mário Filho was responsible for the sports pages and, even in the little space occupied, his texts had already showed the signs of future strategies employed in his chronicles and reports; strategies that are also used in his books, including Blacks in Brazilian football, his most ambitious attempt to rescue the history of Brazilian soccer.
