Three hundred and sixty patients tested for carbohydrate metabolism during gestation were followed from 4 weeks to 5 years after the last pregnancy. All had had an oral glucose tolerance test (GTT) and an oral prednisolone glucose tolerance test (PGTT). The results indicate that patients with abnormal GTT during pregnancy should be followed with yearly tests, since a normal test during the postpartum period does not preclude an abnormal test later. When tests are repeated periodically, the results indicate that carbohydrate metabolism tends to deteriorate.
