Fujiwara et al. detected the surface displacement field associated with the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence from the SAR interferometric analysis using ALOS-2 SAR images and mapped linear discontinuities in the interferograms as the “displacement lineaments (DLs).” Dozens of parallel DLs were pointed out in the area northwest of the outer rim of the Aso Caldera, running from west–northwest to east–southeast. The length of each DL is predominantly 3–5 km. The horizontal spacing between each rupture is approximately 0.5–1 km, and the displacements judged from the discontinuity in the interferograms are primarily around 10-cm dip slip. While many of the DLs appeared along the known active faults, some of them appeared where there are no tectonic geomorphic features. We conducted a series of field surveys to clarify the surface deformation of these DLs in situ and found more than ten surface ruptures along DLs on the ground. The displacement of these ruptures was less than a few tens centimeters, concordant with observations of Fujiwara et al. (2016) in terms of positions, directions, and slip senses. In this chapter, nine examples of such ruptures are described in detail with the photos taken on the ground.
