After many years of animal and human study [1, 11, 14, 20, 32, 49], argon laser iridotomy has become the treatment of choice for treating angle-closure glaucoma. After adaptation of the continuous-wave argon laser to use with the slit lamp, and the pioneering work of Zweng [47–49), L'Esperance [19–21], and Patz [25, 26], this laser soon became available in most centers of ophthalmic research, mainly for the treatment of retinal disease. This development also promoted its widespread use in treating angle-closure glaucoma. There is also continued interest and experimentation with other forms of laser energy that may enable the eye surgeon to make an iridotomy more quickly and safely, and with greater reliability.
