The “run number”, introduced by Harwoodand Ritchey in 1964, is reviewed in this study in light of developments in instrumentation, which now permit run number measurements. The concept is extended to include measurements of “chain punctuation” in semicrystalline polymers, that is, the number of sequences per 100 repeat units that have the capability for crystallization. Intervening sequences, incapable of crys-tallization, are regarded as chain punctuating units. The “sequence number” is also introduced as an adjunct to the “run number”. It is simply the total number of sequences per 100 repeat unitsof a particular type and includes sequence lengths of one to whatever is the longest sequence length in the copolymer chain.
