Quantitative measurements were made of the displacements of the otoliths in the labyrinths of some fishes (pike, perch, ruff, tench) by making X-ray photographs. Surviving intact heads were used. The displacements caused by gravitational forces were about 0.1 mm. for the (large) sacculus otoliths and about 0.005 mm. for the small utriculus and lagena otoliths. For all otoliths the displacement caused by a force of 1 dyne is about 0.006 mm. Centrifugal forces were applied to measure the small displacements of utriculus and lagena. These large accelerations (11 g) did not produce proportionally larger displacements of the sacculus otolith. For the sacculus otolith the response to fibrations was also measured. These measurements indicated that the motion of the otolith is nearly critically damped. The "time of indication" proves to be about 0.02 sec. for the sacculus and about 0.005 sec. for the small otoliths. The coeff. of internal friction [eta] of the jelly like substance between otoliths and epithelium is found to be about 500 x [eta] water. This would also fit the data known for the semicircular canals and for the cochlea. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: L. B. W. Jongkees
