The genusCucumiscomprises about 33 species with a major native diverisity center in tropical and southern Africa. It includes some commercially important and widely grown vegetables such as cucumber and melon. The Wild species ofCucumisis a reservoir of potentially useful genes for genetic improvement of cucumber and melon. These Wild species represent a broad genetic base of valuable characters, such as resistance to diseases, pests, and abiotic stress, which are not present in cucumber and melon. In spite of their importance, pace of utilization of this wild group has been rather slow. In addition to their cross-incompatibility problems with cultivated species, there is a lack of information on various aspects of these wild relatives. However, the first successful interpecific hybridization between wild speciesCucumis hystrixand cultivated cucumber (Cucumis sativusL.) provided a new opportunity to get insight into the wild species. In this chapter, a comprehensive description on various aspects of wildCucumisspecies including taxonomy, morphology, origin, distribution, cytology, evolution and phylogenetics, genomics, as well as the utilization in cucumber improvement are presented for the first time. Future objectives are also proposed for further exploitation and utilization of these important wild relatives.
