In Korean, a three-way distinction in both manner and place of articulation serve to differentiate nine stop consonant phonemes: the aspirated bilabial, dental, and velar stops,/ph, th, kh/; the weak bilabial, dental, and velar stops,/p, t, k/; and the strong bilabial, dental, and velar stops,/P, T, K/2. All Korean stops may occur in initial position; and in this position, they are all voiceless. In the medial position between voiced sounds, the weak stops/p, t, k/are usually manifested by voiced allophones [b, d, g]. The strong and aspirated stops also occur in medial position, but with little allophonic vari ation3. In final position, only unreleased allophones of the weak stops occur.
